GW varsity baseball wins key games

The George West varsity baseball team won three key district games this past week.

On Monday night, the Longhorns defeated Karnes City Badgers by a score of 8-3. Tyler Townsend pitched a complete game to even his fifth win of the season. Townsend gave up six hits and struck out seven Badgers. Leading the way offensively was Brady Jones. Jones stole four bases and scored three runs. Derek Cantu was 2-4 with two doubles, Andrew Katzfey 2-4, Chris Ruiz 2-4, Caleb Montgomery was 1-4 with an RBI. Great defense was played by Seth Pipkin, Jones, Bobby Torres and Jeffrey Hardwick.

On Tuesday night, the Longhorns defeated their arch rivals, the Three Rivers Bulldogs by a score of 22-0. The Horns used three different pitchers on the night. Cantu started and went to two innings and he was relieved by Ruiz who pitched two innings. Katzfey pitched the final inning. Ruiz picked up the pitching victory. Offensively, Katzfey was 2-3 with three RBI’s. Trae Smith 2-3, Caleb Montgomery 2-2, Bobby Torres 1-2 with a triple. Every Longhorn starter had at least one hit. Quest Newberry, Enrigue Nieto, Lucas Barcak each had a hit for the Longhorns. It was a great team effort.

On Friday night, the Longhorns defeated a good Natalia team by a score of 10-0. Cantu pitched a one hitter and struck out ten Mustang batters. Cantu picked up his second win of the season.

Offensively, the Horns were led by Pipkin who was 3-4 with three RBI’s. Torres 2-3 with a towering home run to right field. Cantu and Katzfey each had two hits. Ruiz had a three RBI double and Jeffrey Hardwick and Caleb Montgomery each had a hit and a RBI.

The Longhorns had a great week and improved their season record to 10-1 and an important 4-0 in district. Come out and support the Longhorns on Friday night in George West at 7:00 p.m. against the Dilley Wolves.

JV Longhorns defeated Natalia 13-0. Joseph Feist pitched a complete game shutout. He struck out six and gave up only two hits.

Offensively, the Longhorns were led by Avery Pawelek who was 2-2 with four stolen bases, Mike Palacios 2-3 with three RBI’s. Alex Suniga, Jeremiah Ferrell, Eli Garcia, Noah Arciba, Hunter Wheeler, Jesse Haros, Matt Martinez, Hunter Pipkin all had run scoring base hits for the Longhorns. The JV Longhorns improve to 3-0 in district.
