In the varsity division, Sarah Whitley and Justin Bray each claimed the championships in singles, increasing the chances of taking home the team trophy. Caysi Holt and Taylor Brown placed second in girls doubles, Wesley Iley and Jesse Cansino placed second in boys doubles, and Preston Koenig and Mary Cansino paired up in mixed doubles to also claim second. Alex Combs and Tara Liska placed third while Nathan Morin and Zac McAlister played tough opponents to claim fourth in boys doubles. Salina Ruiz and Amy Garza put up a big fight in their first round match against Dilley, but fell short, and Mario Rodriguez also fell short to his first round opponent, Leal from Karnes City. Ellen Nance struggled early and played a hard-fought match but fell to Jourdanton’s House.
In the junior varsity division, Zeliene Brown claimed the district championship in girls singles just as Cody Brown and Ephraim Gonzalez won the championship in boys doubles. Also placing in the jv division, John Driskill placed third in boys singles, Cody Bartlett and Joseph Gonzales placed third in boys doubles, and Kaitlyn Dolan and Mercedes Alonzo placed fourth in girls doubles. In mixed doubles, Catarina Ruiz and Mason Moore will play Garrett Pawlik and Morgan Booth for the third and fourth place honors at a later date. John Picasso played hard but fell short early against Three Rivers.
The high school tennis teams claimed the district championships in all draws-- Varsity Girls, Varsity Boys, Junior Varsity Girls, Junior Varsity Boys-- and will be taking a total of eight regional qualifiers to compete at the next level in San Marcos on Wednesday, April 18 and Thursday, April 19.
In Junior High tennis, the eighth grade tennis team claimed the team championship due to key wins on both the boys and girls side. Bethany Davis won district in girls singles, Preston Smith and Morgan Miller teamed up to win district in mixed doubles, Baeja Miles and Lindsey Hajek won district in girls doubles, Nayeli Morin and Kayla Strause placed second in girls doubles, Garrett Feist and Sierra Benavides placed second in mixed doubles, Tyler Mixon placed second in boys singles, Zane Howell placed third in boys singles. Also participating at the district meet in junior high were Kelly Lillie and Vanessa Rodriguez in 7th grade girls doubles, Trent Schroeder in 8th grade boys singles, and Nickole Gutierrez in 8th grade girls singles.
This year’s tennis teams played mentally and physically tough and eventually achieved a common goal: to win. Congratulations to all district tennis participants!
