GW UIL team finishes the year on a high note

George West High School’s regular UIL season concluded at the district level with ten students advancing to the Region IV AA academic meet hosted by Texas State University in San Marcos.

The accounting team consisting of juniors Derek Cantu, Brady Jones, Quest Newberry and Bruce Williams placed first at district by a wide margin.

At the regional level, Derek Cantu earned a sixth place medal and Bruce Williams was ranked eighth for a third place team. Flo Moore, accounting coach, is looking forward to a very successful senior year for her team.

The journalism competitors also had a great year with sophomore Shelby James advancing in news writing, feature writing and editorial writing alternate; senior Zac McAlister advancing in news writing and junior Katelyn Keach advancing in headline writing and spelling alternate.  Shelby James earned a third place medal in news writing at the regional competition and will be competing in Austin at the state meet on May 21. Coach Kristin Stewart is excited to be traveling to Austin for the state meet.

Sophomore Avery Pawelek headed to San Marcos with a third place medal and top biology score. Tara Liska, sophomore, faced very tough competition to qualify for the regional meet in prose interpretation. Senior Joseph Moore was the alternate in computer applications. Glenda Locke coaches science and spelling, Diane Johnson coaches prose interpretation and headline writing, and Lucy Chandler coaches computer applications.
