GW started strong with a 15 point score in the first half of the game. Dilley struggled early in the game, managing only five points in the first quarter and trailing by 10 at the half. The Lady Horns were off in the third quarter putting only three points on the board while their opponent scored eight and closed the lead to five. Both teams played well offensively in the fourth quarter as GW and Dilley scored 13 and 14 point respectively. Dilley was closing in on the Lady Horns but was unable to capture the lead and lost by four. Scorers for GW were: Rylie Shannon eight, Amber Villafranca seven, Alexa Wheeler and Elizabeth Cansino five, and Kiesha Lazo, Kaity Taylor and Courtney Larson contributing two each.
GW beat Cotulla on Friday, Feb. 6th in a hard fought game at home. The game was closely contested throughout with GW in the lead by no more than three points and a tied game after three quarters. The difference in the game came down to free throw opportunities in the fourth quarter. Cansino converted on 4 of 5 free throws and Villafranca scored on one attempt. GW defeated Cotulla 28-23. Cansino and Wheeler scored eight points each, Shannon tallied four, Villafranca and Sydney Williamson added three each and Taylor contributed two points.
The GW JV team is 7-3 in district.
A week before the Lady Horn JV Squad lost a close game at home to Jourdanton (Jan. 30.) GW matched the Squaws basket for basket throughout the game with the score tied at the end of each of the first three quarters.
Jourdanton capitalized on turnovers late in the fourth quarter scoring on two lay-ups to lead by four over the Lady Horns. GW remained aggressive in the fourth quarter and was rewarded with free throw opportunities, but the Lady Horns were unable to get on the scoreboard from the free throw line and put the game away. Jourdanton won 37-33.
