GW tennis teams are off to good start

The George West tennis teams headed to Beeville to participate in the Beeville Tennis Tournament last week. Junior Varsity played on Thursday and Varsity played on Friday.

Playing doubles for the Junior Varsity boys division was Alex Combs and Yo Han Kang. Combs and Kang played well, but fell short to teams from Victoria Memorial and Pleasanton.

In the Varsity division, Kathryn Davenport claimed 2nd place in the girls’ singles division defeating Sinton’s Cookie Hiracheta (8-0), Goliad’s Mallory Weaver (6-0,6-1), and Beeville’s Ellen Addison (6-2, 6-1). Davenport came up short against Sinton’s Kelci Molina (6-1, 6-3).

Katheryn Cansino paired up with Arriel Millermon in the girls’ doubles division but were overwhelmed by teams from Beeville and San Antonio Fox Tech. Frank Alvarez played in boys’ singles but was defeated by Victoria Memorial’s Bret Micek (0-8), which put him in the consolation bracket where he defeated Port Aransas’ Connor Collins (8-5) before losing to Pleasanton’s James Huschke.

Luke Sehlke and Kristina Alvarez played in the mixed doubles division and lost in a split set match against Beeville’s Coester/Ortega (1-6, 6-4, 10-3). With this loss, Alvarez and Sehlke were placed in the consolation bracket where they swept the remainder of their matches. They beat Goliad’s Hale/Wood (8-4) and Port Aransas’ Lucke/Thrasher (8-6) to win the consolation bracket.

The tennis team will go to Orange Grove Wednesday evening for a dual and will then travel to Hebbronville for more tennis competition.
