Yearling band breaks record

The George West Yearling Symphonic Band broke all records at the UIL Solo & Ensemble Contest on Feb. 21.

The band sent a record 40 students to the competition and brought home an impressive 39 first division superior medals. This breaks the previous record of 33 medals set in 2007.

Woodwind soloists earning medals are Jessica Alonzo, Mary Cansino, Raye Bednorz, Kaitlyn Dolan, Kaitlyn Keach, Brittany Root, Allison Bryce, Emily Feist, Carley Little, Clarisa Arciba and Ellen Nance.

Brass soloists receiving first divisions are Joseph Feist, Tyler Kerr, Avery Pawelek, Matthew Hyde, Michelle Smith, Caleb Whits, Marisol Santos, Theo Gonzales, Al Makaney, Anderson Daniels and Randy Garcia. Making a division one on percussion solos are Preston Koenig, Morgan Benavides and Darren Rhodes.

A very special soloist, Ella Lowrance played two solos on two different instruments, flute and bassoon. Lowrance earned a first division on both performances.

Several ensemble members were also awarded first division medals. They are Tiffany Martinez, Preston Koenig, Darren Rhodes, Morgan Benavides, John Driskill and Nexpa Galarneau on a percussion ensemble. Lauren Alexander, Tanicia Gutierrez and Raye Bednorz made a one on a flute trio. A trumpet trio consisting of Joseph Feist, Tyler Kerr and Avery Pawelek also were given a top rating.
