A little more than 1,000 pounds of marijuana was discovered in packages among fruit from the Texas Valley on Wednesday, Nov. 14.

The Central South Texas Criminal Investigations Unit made the drug bust, according to a spokesman for the task force.

A tractor-trailer rig was stopped at 10:30 p.m. on U.S. Highway 281 to check if it was using commercial diesel fuel and not oil field diesel.

Information on exactly where the bust was made was not available.

Soon, a canine search of the trailer revealed 79 packages of marijuana weighing almost 1,002 pounds.

The 31-year-old driver, of Florida, was arrested, but he was released on Nov. 15, because he denied knowing about the marijuana, according to the spokesman.

“We had to let him go,” the spokesman said.

The fruit – limes and watermelons – were loaded in McAllen and Laredo, and the driver said he didn’t watch as the trailer was loaded.

However, the task force spokesman said the tractor-trailer rig was confiscated.

“The investigation is being continued,” the spokesman said.
