DPS Trooper Kolton Kendall said the driver of an 18-wheeler was headed southbound around 4 a.m. when he fell asleep.
The driver was identified as Miguel Rivera,42, of Corpus Christi.
“He ran across the center median and straddled the barrier,” Kendall said.
While the truck was straddling the barrier, its drive shaft was ripped away.
The truck then rolled into the concrete gully, puncturing the fuel tanks.
The truck caught fire and burned.
The driverworked for Ben E. Keith Foods and was headed from San Antonio to Corpus Christi.
Three Rivers police officers were the first responders on the accident scene.
