BEEVILLE — Highways north of Beeville continue to be dangerous places for travelers. Two men were killed in different accidents in just the last week.

The first accident took place on FM Road 673 west of Pettus at 7:19 o’clock Friday morning, Feb. 22.

A 2002 Ford Mustang driven by 44-year-old Reyes Ruiz of Pettus was westbound on that highway when the vehicle veered into the oncoming traffic lane.

Ruiz apparently over-corrected, crossed the highway, struck and went over a bridge barrier and came to rest in a bar ditch on the north side of the highway on the vehicle’s left side.

He died at the scene.

The second fatal accident occurred on U.S. Highway 181 about 7:32 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 24.

According to a Texas Department of Public Safety report, Randolph Bishop, 44, was killed when his 2005 Harley-Davidson motorcycle struck a 2002 Ford van head-on about three miles north of Beeville.

According to the report, Bishop was traveling north on the highway and following an unknown vehicle.

At the time, José Garcia of Kenedy was driving south on the highway in a 2002 Ford van.

The driver of the unknown vehicle reportedly veered into the southbound lane, causing Garcia to have to pull into the northbound lane to avoid a collision.

But Garcia’s van struck Bishop’s motorcycle, killing the Beeville man.

The driver of the unknown vehicle did not stop.
