McMullen school board approves purchase of staff iPads Principal resigns as TEA begins investigation

TILDEN – The McMullen County School District trustees approved the purchase of 50 staff iPads with AppleCare for $32,900 at their March 21 meeting.

The iPad order was to be placed this week and staff will start training with them when they arrive.

“The iPads are being deployed to the staff so that they will have time to familiarize themselves with the device before the district distributes them to the students next year,” said Kim Underwood, technology director. “The staff will complete three days of in-service provided by Apple, as well as attend several Lunch ’n Learn sessions at the school.”

The iPads will be in use by the staff in the fall if all the training goes well and an additional 260 student iPads will be purchased over the summer with training provided for students and their parents.

In other items, the board appointed Superintendent Dave Underwood as the interim district principal after Rosie Cavazos resigned the position on March 8. Underwood will be assisted by counselor Mary Franklin and Dean of Students Tony Taylor.

In an email, Underwood noted that Cavazos had resigned “for personal reasons.”

The educator certificate, which can be viewed on the Texas Education Agency website, for Cavazos has a note on this that says, “Note: This individual is currently under review by the SBEC Professional Discipline Unit.”

“There were some allegations,” Underwood said in the email. “Because of privacy laws and because there is an ongoing state investigation, we are not at liberty to discuss the allegations. There is an investigation at the state level.”

When asked how long the investigation will last, DeEtta Culbertson, spokesperson for TEA, said that the length of an investigation “depends on the nature of investigation.”

She said that if the investigation is criminal, it will take much longer because the law enforcement agency has to finish its investigation before TEA will even launch its; however, if it is just an investigation by the TEA it can take “ a few weeks to a few months” to conclude.

“If the educator is under investigation by the district and resigns or is terminated, then the district is required to notify TEA,” Culbertson said. “Anyone can forward a complaint to us and depending on the nature of the complaint, that determines the next step.”

First the TEA must decide if the complaint is something that is in its jurisdiction, or if it is a school district matter or if it is a criminal matter.
