GEORGE WEST – The Longhorns baseball team split their games this past week to go one and one in district 31 play. The Horns picked up a win over Taft on Tuesday night, five to three. On Friday night, a 7-2 lead slipped out of their hands against Banquete, as they fell 9-7 to drop to 4-2 in district.

In Tuesday’s win vs Taft, senior Andrew Katzfey (two and two) picked up the win for the Horns, giving up two runs off of five hits and six Ks in his outing. Classmate Derek Cantu came in late in the game to pick up his second save of the season to secure the win. At the plate for the Horns, Kody Merkovich went one for three on the night, with his big single driving in two runs in the fourth inning to give George West a 4-2 lead. Merkovich later scored in the same inning when Jeremiah Ferrell drove him in off his single. Cantu and Katzfey also picked up an RBI for the Horns to help produce runs for the Horns offense.

On Friday night, Cantu (four and zero) got the start on the mound for the Horns, going 6.33 innings before stepping off the mound in a no decision. Cantu had eight Ks on the night, also giving up eight hits and three earned runs to the Bulldogs. Alex Suniga (one and three) attempted to close out the game and pick up the save, but was unable to do so, picking up the loss against Banquete. The George West defense committed three critical errors in the last two innings to allow seven runs to cross the plate for Banquete, giving them a big 9-7 comeback win. At the plate for the Horns, freshman catcher Xavier Paiz led the way with two RBIs on this one for three night. Brady Jones went two for four with a single and a triple, one RBI and also scoring a run. Mikey Palacios also had an RBI in the first inning off his single. With the loss, the Horns dropped to a tie for first place in District 30 with Banquete, with both teams at 4-2. This week, the Horns will face Mathis on Monday night, and Odem on Thursday night. Both games will take place in George West.
