Rivas was hauling approximately 140 barrels of crude oil when he was struck from behind by another 18-wheeler. Josue de Jesus Ramos was driving a Reynolds Energy Transport tanker also carrying crude oil.
Ramos, while failing to control his speed, hit Rivas’ truck, rolling it on its side and blocking the northbound lanes of Highway 281. The collision caused both trucks to spill their loads of crude oil onto Highway 281.
The tanker driven by Rivas lost approximately 5,880 gallons of crude oil. The tanker operated by Ramos lost an undetermined amount of his crude oil load.
Rivas was transported by ambulance to Christus Spohn Hospital in Beeville. Ramos was taken by Air Life to University Hospital in San Antonio.
A North Ridge Express 18-wheeler carrying frozen chicken, driven by Glenn Davidson, attempted to avoid the accident when he struck a C&J Spec-Rent mobile crane truck driven by Brett Malloy.
Malloy’s truck went into the bar ditch. He was able to correct his line of travel to steer safely back on the highway after approximately one mile. The truck and trailer driven by Davidson fell in the bar ditch on its side. Davidson and Malloy were both transported by ambulance to the Beeville hospital. At this time, their conditions are unknown.
The four-vehicle accident shut down the highway for seven to eight hours. The Hazmat crew was called in to clean the road and recover all spilled crude oil.
