THREE RIVERS – Co-Publisher George G. "Jeff" Latcham announced this week that veteran journalist Ben Tinsley of Texas has been hired to helm The Progress.

Tinsley, who turns 47 this month, is modifying his title to "Reporter and Editor" to reflect a renewed approach toward writing and reporting in the newspaper.

Tinsley has won several writing and reporting awards during his more than 20 years as a journalist working in Texas, New Mexico, Indiana and Nevada. He most recently worked at the Jacksonville Daily Progress in East Texas.

Other newspapers at which he has worked include the Arlington Morning News, the Amarillo Globe-News, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, the Odessa American, the Baytown Sun, the Sheridan Press, and the Galveston County Daily News.

While working in Las Vegas he covered business news for the Las Vegas Business Press and the entertainment industry for publisher Michael Politz's Vegas Eye blog and Las Vegas Food and Beverage Magazine. He also worked as a radio reporter in Clovis, New Mexico, in the early 1990s.

Latcham said he is enthusiastic about the hire.

"We're really excited to bring a veteran journalist like Ben Tinsley to The Progress staff," Latcham said. "He's an award-winning and talented writer with a demonstrated ability to find and develop important stories for his readers. We think that's a great fit for The Progress and the dynamic growth and changes we're all witnessing in the Eagle Ford Shale region."

Tinsley said he is equally excited.

"It's great to work with an office full of talented people who care so much about this area," Tinsley said. "I predict this will be an interesting experience for everyone involved."

As a 1991 graduate of Tarleton State University in Stephenville, Texas, Tinsley is a second-generation journalist. His late father, Jack B. Tinsley, covered the assassination of John F. Kennedy as a reporter and led the Fort Worth Star-Telegram to two Pulitzer prizes as its executive editor in the 1980s.

His mother, Anne Miller, also an acclaimed journalist, met his father while both were working in the Star-Telegram newsroom in the 1960s.

Tinsley's 19-year-old son Jake—currently a freshman at Jacksonville College—is a nationally-acclaimed comic book author who is also the publisher for Wham Bang Comics, the company the journalist created to publish his son's work.

In addition to The Progress website, Tinsley's work can be seen at http://btinsleyreporter.wordpress.com. His journalism blog is http://bentinsleyreporter.blogspot.com.

He can be reached at The Progress office at 361-786-3022.
