THREE RIVERS — Are you a fan of American Idol?

If so, you might want to be at the Bar@3 Rivers Bar & Grill in the 200 block of North Harborth Avenue at 8 p.m. Saturday to check out the final installment of the South Texas Singers Showdown.

There are 20 finalists and a $2,000 award on the line for this Karaoke event, which has been a long time coming, explained DJ Roberto Cisneros, one of the event organizers.

“The South Texas Singers Showdown 2014 Finalists are set for the Final Showdown — March 29th is the big day we’ve all been waiting for,” Cisneros announced on his Facebook page. “This is the number one Karaoke Contest in South Texas only at Bar @ 3 Rivers! Come on out and see our amazing lineup of singers.”

Many of the local talents — including Andre Mathis, whose golden voice was spotlighted in a story in The Progress a few months ago — will be present to compete. Additionally, Karaoke mainstay Kayla Garza and many other talented vocalists will compete — karaoke style.

Event coordinator Vasu Rao said whether karaoke participants knew it or not, they were all in consideration for this group of finalists at one time or another.

“I know I keep saying this, but I really love it when a singer has the guts to climb up on my stage and give it 100 percent,” Rao said. “A singing competition is the best combination of these wonderful artists and the music venue.”

Rao predicted the competition for this particular crown will be fierce.

“Again, I’m repeating myself but I really want everyone to come, have fun, enjoy the talent and the great crowd,” Rao said.

Rao, Cisneros and Delia De Los Santos said they have designed the event with the idea of discovering the next great local artist. It is hoped by all of them that those who win the South Texas Singers Showdown can move upward and onward to greater competitions.
