The Live Oak County Rodeo Parade Association annually awards a scholarship to a local high school senior who has excelled in the sport of rodeo.

This year held a unique challenge for the LOCRPA. There were no high school senior boys competing.

With a grit and determination well-known in this area, members of the association located a much-deserving recipient.

The young man they selected was Christian Hernandez of George West.

What’s different about this youngster?

He’s only 7 years old.

This young man is the son of Bridget and Gabriel Hernandez, grandson of Victor and Sherry Ybanez of George West and Erasmo and Tomie Hernandez of Harlingen.

While only in the single digits age-wise, this cowboy has already excelled and impressed many in the sport of rodeo.

Christian was awarded a Montana Silversmith buckle which was presented to him by Back Flippin’ Johnny, Rodeo Clown at the Live Oak County Rodeo on Friday, March 14.

He already has an impressive rodeo resume, even at his tender age, with wins in several area rodeos.

Hernandez had previously taken home the buckle in the Live Oak County Mutton Bustin’ as well as the Tilden CPRA Mutton Bustin’ for the past two years.

Already a hit with a second place all-around win at the 2014 Buck Days Mutton Bustin’ in Refugio on March 21 and 22, Christian’s peers say this young cowboy is one to watch in the coming years.
