REFUGIO – Hundreds of thousands of dollars were discovered in a southbound vehicle after Refugio police pulled the car over for a routine traffic stop on Friday, March 28.

Refugio Police Sgt. Bruce Radford conducted the stop for a safety violation on the car.

The driver of the car was Angelina Garza from La Joya.

The routine stop on South Alamo Street led police to suspect more, and a search revealed suspected illegal contraband.

Police Investigator Danny Madrigal and Police Office Luis Flores assisted in the investigation, and a hidden compartment filled with numerous bundles of cash totaling hundreds of thousands of dollars was found, according to Police Chief Andy Lopez Jr.

“The currency is suspected of being monies derived from the illicit activities of drug sales,” Lopez said.

Garza, 54, was arrested and charged with money laundering.

She was taken to the Refugio County Jail with bond set at $500,000.
