George West Band students who are in positions of leadership in the band began summer practice earlier than most band students.  Officers and section leaders began practice last Wednesday in preparation for full band rehearsals which began later in the week.   Student leaders rehearsed new music under the direction of band director, Jim Williamson.  In addition to the music, students were instructed on how to teach other band members.  Fundamentals of marching were reviewed and practiced.  The first week of August will bring football, volleyball, band, and cheerleaders back to campus to prepare for the new year. Once again it is time to get ready for school. That means shopping for clothes, school supplies and finding out if your friends are in your classes. It also means that many students will be hitting the practice fields, gymnasiums, and courts for extracurricular activities. The members of the Big Blue Band from Longhorn Land have already begun plans to ensure their success this year.

Last week section leaders met with the directors and drum majors to review procedures and have a mental walk through of the new show. Then they practiced the music in order to be ready for full band practices which began Aug. 3. Practices will run from 8:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. until Aug. 12, when they will be held from 4-7 p.m. On Aug. 19 the band will hold their annual exhibition for parents and community members from 5-6 p.m. at the practice field.

School begins for GWISD students on Aug. 24. Practice will be after school from 4-7 p.m. on Mondays and Tuesdays. On Wednesdays sectional practice will take place from 3:30 p.m.-4:30 p.m.. Thursdays the band will practice from 4-5 p.m.

This year the UIL marching contest will be Oct. 17. Details will be announced as the date nears. The band boosters are busy stocking the concession stands and preparing for a busy season. There are many exciting events for the 2009-10 school year.

The first Band Boosters meeting will be Aug. 10 at 7 p.m. in the band hall. All band parents are invited to attend.
