If you are age 9-16 then you must successfully complete a Hunter Education or you must accompanied.*
If you are age 17 and over you must successfully complete a Hunter Education course or purchase a one-time-only “Hunter Education Deferral” good for the current license year, and you must be accompanied.*
*Accompanied means: By a person who is at least 17 years of age; who is licensed to hunt in Texas; who has passed hunter education or is exempt (born before Sept. 2,1971), and you must be within normal voice control.
“Hunter Education Deferral” cost is $10 and is one-time-only and only valid through the current license year. Note: A person who has been convicted or has received deferred adjudication for violation of the mandatory hunter education requirement is prohibited from applying for a deferral.
Proof of certification or “Hunter Education Deferral” is required to be on your person while hunting. However, certification is not required to purchase a hunting license.
Upon successful completion of the course, hunters receive a temporary certification card that they may legally use along with their valid hunting license to hunt.
A permanent card is mailed within a short period of time and is good for life. Youth under 18-years-old must have parent signature and all participants must have a social security number.
