She continued, “Last year’s theme was “Anchored in Excellence”. As a new librarian in George West ISD I accepted the challenge to bring some new ideas to the high school. We added new computer tables to the library and as a result every class period the computers were used by faculty and students. After attending regional training I was able to bring back valuable information in better utilizing the K-12 Databases offered freely to us by the state of Texas. The academic performance of the students was evident as the year came to an end and awards and recognitions were overflowing. We also updated many non-fiction and reference resources for research projects and brought some popular fiction to the students. Circulation of these materials indicated more students were picking up our books to read for pleasure! With this as our premise, it is the hope of GWHS; that by holding our book fair early we will be able to raise enough money to have additional online database resources and give the students and teachers an even better advantage in academic performance.”
The book fair will run Tuesday, Sept. 8 – Monday, Sept. 14th, from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. A special family night will be held before the game on Friday, Sept. 11, from 5-7 p.m. There will be daily contests for the students and teachers and family night offers a special drawing for any attendee. The community is welcome to come into the book fair during school hours but must stop by the office to obtain a visitors pass. Any adult community member (over 18 years of age) is welcome to volunteer their time in serving at the book fair as well.
