On Saturday (Oct. 24), George West ISD’s Big Blue Band from Longhorn Land along with 20 other bands competed in the UIL Area E Marching Band Competition at East Central High School in San Antonio.

The band performed their best performance of the season, but fell short of advancing to the finals. High school band director Doc Williamson designed the difficult show and chose the difficult music knowing that competition would be tough in this area.

Judges’ comments and opinions varied making advancement very difficult. Many parents and fans traveled to San Antonio to watch the performance, but some were disappointed to find that the marching schedule had changed. The band performed at 2 p.m. rather than at 2:15 p.m. Those present were privileged with an outstanding performance.

The show consisted of Carmina Burana, Jupiter, and Pines of Rome. James Perez, the trumpet soloist, featured in Jupiter performed flawlessly and the band gave it their all on Saturday.

The “Energizer Bunny” award goes to flautist Victoria Wasicek. She experienced significant adversity during the performance but kept going, and going, and going, while never missing a step. She is this writer’s hero!

The band students said they truly appreciated the support from their parents and friends plus the memorable sendoff by the George West Volunteer Fire Department and city police. Making history for the band and school district was made more special knowing that so many people in the community support them.

Come out to Longhorn Field on Friday night to watch their last home performance of the season.

The last time the band advanced to area was in 1998.
