A recent class assignment was a speech entitled “Something in My School or Community That Needs to Change, and What I’m Going to Do About It.” Several thoughtful responses were generated, and the class decided to adopt three projects to promote within their school and the community. As their teacher, I was pleased by their enthusiasm and encouraged that these future leaders are eager to embrace such ambitious projects.
Be on the lookout for their posters, flyers, articles, and activities. Please join me in encouraging them to take active roles to effect change and tackle issues they feel strongly about. The following is a student article, written as part of a class project to improve areas of concern within the community.
We have a big problem in our community. It is also bad for our environment and ecosystem. A big way to help this is by GOING GREEN. Things to try help this is by: using “green” gas, turning off when not using them, unplug your electrical devices (also when not in use), if on a vacation turn off your air conditioner, and recycle. By doing those little things you could be doing a lot to save our world. Don’t think we are dropping all of the work on you; we are also helping the world. We are going to call businesses and asking them if we can have some of their old bins. We will use those bins for the recycling items. Hopefully we will get them, and if we do we are going to put them up around Three Rivers ISD. We are also making posters to put up around Three Rivers so the community will know how to go GREEN. We ourselves of the 6th grade Character Ed class are going to model the behavior for you. Please tell your friends and family about this problem because we can’t fix this on our own, we need your help.
