He was born Aug. 1, 1925 in Edna, Kansas to Jack and Zora Merrell. He graduated from Pettus High School in Pettus. After graduation Roy worked for Legget Construction Co. and Gus Canales. In 1952 he married Margie Hobbs Box. They moved to Mission, where he worked for Atlantic Oilfield Co. After a few years he was transferred to Gregory, where he did contract gauging, while driving a school bus and working for the City of Gregory. In 1962 he started Merrell Lease Service Co. which he owned and operated for many years. Margie passed away in 1976 and Roy married June Mayfield Owen in 1977. Roy and June moved to Three Rivers, where they lived for 27 years while Roy enjoyed ranching. In 2003 they moved back to Portland, where Roy enjoyed visiting his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife June Merrell; daughter Debbie Harris; son Gary (Renee) Merrell; step-daughters Kim Ackel, Kellene (Bill) Baird; step-son Dennis (Teri) Owen; two brothers Duane (Joyce) Merrell, Wayne Merrell; three sisters Carolyn Davis, Norma (Ed) Apple, Ruth Warwas; 9 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren.
Visitation was held from 6-8 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 16, at the Limbaugh Funeral Home. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 17, at the Portland Church of Christ. Interment followed at the LaRosa Cemetery in Woodsboro.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or the South Texas Children’s Home.
