Linebacker Clayton Whitley sacked Hitchcock’s quarterback, forcing a fumble recovery by Scott Rosenbaum with two minutes and twenty seconds remaining in the game to preserve the victory. The O-line again led the way for the Longhorn backs to rush for 396 yards on 61 carries. Ends Cameron Moore, Albert Gamez, Travis Walker, Robert Kerr, Lucas Rannefeld; tackles Donovan Grimes, Aaron McCabe, David Torres; guards Trey Preece, Joey Leal; and center Holden Holm dominated the line of scrimmage against a big and talented Hitchcock defense. Individual rushing leaders for the Longhorns were Shannon Taylor with 179 yards on 19 carries; Joseph Lopez with 74 yards on eight carries; Cayleb Holt with 70 yards on 12 carries; Scott Rosenbaum with 54 yards on ten carries; and Seth Pipkin with 17 yards on three carries. Colton Tindol completed three passes for 33 yards. One was to Cameron Moore for 19 yards, one was to Shannon Taylor for nine yards and one was to Albert Gamez for five yards and a TD. Tindol did throw two first-half interceptions that led to Hitchcock touchdowns.
The Wrecking Crew Defense had their hands full trying to contain the spread offense wide-open attack of Hitchcock. They were able to limit the Bulldogs to only 66 yards on 19 rushes, but the high octane passing attack of the Bulldogs led by quarterback Morris Tuck completed 14 of 28 passes for 230 yards and four touchdowns.
George West received the opening kick-off of the game and scored on their first possession on a 42-yard Cayleb Holt run. Hitchcock scored next but missed the PAT and George West led seven to six at the end of the first quarter.
Ty Jimmerson opened the second quarter with a 31-yard field goal and was also successful on five of six extra point kicks. Hitchcock then scored the next 14 points before George West added a touchdown just before halftime on a beautiful five yard pass catch by Albert Gamez from Colton Tindol. This brought the halftime score to Hitchcock 20 and George West 17.
Hitchcock scored the first touchdown of the second half and led 27 to 17. George West followed with two touchdowns. The first was on a Scott Rosenbaum two-yard run and the second on a Joseph Lopez 20-yard dash to regain the lead 30 to 27 by the end of the third quarter.
The wild fourth quarter began with Hitchcock scoring to take the lead 33 to 30. George West responded with a touchdown of their own to retake the lead at 37 to 33. On the ensuing kickoff, the Longhorn’s Zane Schorp recovered a perfectly executed on-side kick and the Longhorns were able to score their final touchdown of the night on a Joseph Lopez 12-yard run.
Hitchcock scored the final touchdown of the night and a two point conversion was successful which brought the final score to 44 for the Longhorns and 41 for Hitchcock. The last five minutes of the game were loaded with fireworks as the Wrecking Crew defense forced a Hitchcock fumble, but the Longhorns returned the favor moments later with a fumble of their own. After two Hitchcock incomplete passes, Whitley’s big play of the night sealed the Longhorn victory.
The hard-fought victory was at a high price. Backs Chayson Holt, Albert Gamez, and Marciano Sanchez all received injuries that make their return for the playoffs unlikely. Several other Longhorn players received various injuries, but are expected to play next week in the quarterfinal round of the playoffs against the undefeated Altair-Rice team. This third round match-up will be played Saturday, November 29, 2008 at 1 p.m. at Memorial Stadium in Victoria. This 2008 edition of the Big Blue Wrecking Crew is a special group of kids and if you aren’t supporting them with your attendance at the games you don’t know what you are missing. Hope to see you in Victoria to watch another Longhorn victory.
