On Monday, Dec. 15, in an assembly at the Three Rivers Auditorium, the winners of this year’s VFW sponsored Patriot’s Pen contest were recognized and awarded. Ladies Auxiliary president, Nancy Coquat began by acknowledging all the students who participated in this year’s contest and thanking the Junior High Counselor Stephanie Schuette and Coach Chris Sutherlin for being the driving force behind the contest.

VFW Post 6119 Commander Rudy Pena announced this year’s two winners. They are Kailey Harless and Luis Riojas. Commander Pena presented each winner with a Certificate of Recognition and a check for $50.

The Patriot’s Pen Contest is open to all sixth, seventh and eighth graders in public or private school and to students that are home schooled. The VFW’s National Commander in Chief chooses the topic each year and this year’s topic was “Why Veterans should be Honored”.

The students that participated have a good knowledge concerning Veterans and that is why they should be honored.
