The GWISD cafetorium was filled with the sounds of Christmas on Tuesday, Dec. 16.

The evening began with the junior high band performing four songs. Christmas Concerto #3 featured three soloists: Mary Cansino on piccolo, Joseph Feist on trumpet and Caleb White on trombone.

The second selection was quite different than Mr. Tchaikovsky could have anticipated it being played. Dance of the Reed Flutes did not have the typical flute performances, but featured a duet of tubas. Anderson Daniels and Randy Garcia gave listeners a different twist to the popular holiday tune. The percussion section was featured in Latin Bell Carol. The final selection of the evening for the young musicians was Rudolph in Wonderland.

After a brief intermission to allow for the switching of bands on stage, the high school band began their portion of the concert with Children’s March. The band then performed an arrangement of Greensleeves, followed by crowd favorite Celtic Carol, which featured flautist Hannah Davis. The final number performed by the award winning musicians was based on O Come, O Come Emmanuel and was entitled Christmas Variants.

Both directors announced the members of their bands who were selected to region band, and those students who will move onward to area competition on Jan. 10. The students will enjoy their time off, as will Doc and Mr. Cordani, and return in January to begin practicing their spring concert and competition music.
