Helen Braly of Portland passed away Saturday, August 7, 2010 after a joyous 97 years. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend.

Helen was born January 23, 1913 in Bullard, Texas. She was the third of nine children born to Alvin and Cassie (Tarrant) Henderson. Helen grew up in Palestine, Texas where she later graduated from high school.

On August 27, 1932 she married Ray Braly, also of Palestine. In 1953, they moved to Three Rivers, Texas where Helen remained until 1991.

Helen was an active member of the Three Rivers First United Methodist Church where she enjoyed her morning women's circle. She was a member of the Little Acorn Study Club and an avid bridge player. The joy of her life was cooking for and spending time with her family and friends.

Helen is preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Ray Braly; her parents, two brothers, and three sisters.

Helen is survived by two daughters: Helen Lynn (Theodore) Arnst of Garden Ridge, Texas and Betty (Tom) Bomar of Portland, Texas; four grandchildren: Karl (Rita) Arnst of Three Rivers, Texas, Cynthia (Randy) Hormuth of Boerne, Texas, Kristin (Jeff) Ryan of Austin, Texas and Jana (Mike) Norrell of Sarita, Texas; nine great-grandchildren: Katy (Brad) Turnbaugh, Krissy Arnst, Travis, Tyler and Heather Hormuth, Christopher and Sean Ryan, Ryan and Collin Norrell; she is also survived by three sisters: Eloise Buchanan of Duncanville, Texas, Pat Kennedy, Lake Jackson and Bobbie (Don) Denson of Palestine, Texas; her brother-in-law, Neual Braly of Palestine, Texas and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank Coastal Palms Nursing Center, Vista Care Hospice and the Lighthouse Hospice families for their dedication. Dina Peterson, for her unwavering friendship and loving care; Able Almendarez for bringing so much sunshine to her life in her last few years; Tammy Lazcano and Yolanda Cruz for their kindness. Our greatest thanks to Rev. Norman Sulaica, Jr. and Rev. Mark Porterfield for their spiritual support. And to Dr. Jerome Lee Sang, we extend our immeasurable gratitude for all the years of excellent care.

On Tuesday, August 10, 2010 the family will receive friends at the First United Methodist Church in Three Rivers, Texas from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., with services to begin at 11:00 a.m..

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make donations in Helen's memory to Vista Care Hospice, Lighthouse Hospice or to the church or charity of your choice.
