For the third year in a row, Dylan Jaso’s drawing was selected to be published in the annual Panhandle Energy Calendar.

The Refugio seventh grader received a $100 gift card from American Express. The drawing is displayed during the month of September. His drawing depicts violations that distract from driving including texting and talking on cell phones and driving while intoxicated.

Dylan enjoys drawing comics, taking on political issues and everyday activities as his subjects. He says he’d like to make a career out of drawing comics for a newspaper.

Dylan sits down during the evenings and just lets his mind take him where it wants to go, according to his parents, Reynol and Mildred Jaso.

“Dylan also writes and makes music in his spare time,” Reynol said. “He has good beats and lyrics though I do not like rap, it’s a generation thing.”

The seventh grader also enjoys playing football. Standing 5 ft. 10 inches and weighing in at 225 pounds, he looks forward to football season. However, this year he was sidelined by a broken foot and was able to play just one game.

The honor of winning the calendar contest again this year lifted the family’s spirits since Dylan has had two bouts of bad luck. In addition to the broken leg, he fell ill with pneumonia for the second year in a row during the holidays. As a matter of fact, the exact day - Dec. 21.

“We caught it early.” said Mildred. “We know what symptoms to look for and how his breathing sounds when he is having problems.”

He is currently taking medications and did not have a hospital stay this time.
