“We had two girls under the weather and that left me with only two posts and they got into foul trouble early in third period,” said Pettus head coach Darcy Siddon.
The Lady Eagles found the going tough as the visiting Port Aransas Lady Marlins cruised to a 58-31 victory over the depleted home team on Friday night.
The Marlins used their height advantage to pound the ball inside and also used some good outside shooting to capture a 15-8 advantage after the first period.
That margin stretched to 30-15 when halftime rolled around. The Marlins kept up their scoring through the third period to add 16 points to their side of the scoreboard. The Lady Eagles hit for another seven points to fall behind 46-22 heading into the final quarter. The visitors added three more points to their lead by capturing the final stanza, 12-9.
“I ran a five-guard offense against a pretty tall Port A squad. The Marlins were hot and we struggled against their man defense,” Siddon said.
Destiny Carrillo and Ashley Duran each had eight points in the loss for the Lady Eagles. Hailee Schauer finished with six points. Chloe Garza hit for five and Mari Carrizales and Hannah Huskey each contributed two.
“I am very proud of the effort of all my ladies, for playing sick, playing in a position they had never played, and running offenses that we had never tried because of the different personnel on the floor,” Siddon said.
The Lady Eagles played host to Falls City on Tuesday night and will have an open date on Friday night.
Next Tuesday evening, the Eagles and Lady Eagles will be Kenedy to meet the Lions and Leopards.
