Rita Rene Ramirez, of Austin and formerly of Refugio, was elected by her colleagues as John H. Reagan High School’s Teacher of the Year, last week.

“Rita is a very important person at John H. Reagan High School,” said Anabel Garza, principal, in a letter to Ramirez’s parents. “She is well respected by her colleagues and loved by her students.”

The honor is reserved for the most outstanding teachers in the field, Garza wrote.

“She is clearly a star amongst her colleagues,” said Garza.

Ramirez was lauded for changing the lives of many children at the school.

“Often times when our kids leave home we wish them well, worry and hope that we have done a good job,” the principal said. “I would like to let you know that your daughter is a great person and wonderful teacher.”

Rita Rene is the daughter of Jimmy and Rita Ramirez of Refugio.
