The Juneteenth pageant scheduled for Friday has been postponed until a later date. But an array of activities are scheduled for the annual celebration beginning Saturday, June 18, at 11 a.m. in the Expo Center.

One of the oldest African American celebrations in the country, Juneteenth is a family-oriented observance that focuses on community and recounts stories of the past.

Among the day-long activities, gospel singers from Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church and the Angelic Gospel Mass Choir will provide entertainment. DJ Cliff Smith will also provide music.

A cake walk, games for children, watermelon eating contest for children and adults, a silent auction, domino and a spade tournament are all slated throughout the day.

The noon meal is free to the public.

Sterling Scott, a principal at Round Rock High School, is this year’s guest speaker.

Sterling and his wife Theresa reside in Elgin, along with their two children, Danielle and Cameron.

The son of the late Frankie Scott, Sterling is a 1983 Refugio High School graduate. He received a Bachelor of Science Degree in education from Texas University in San Marcos.

Sterling earned his master’s degree in education administration from Prairie View University.
