James Thomas “Tommy” Herring Jr., 80, died Friday, Jan. 16, 2009. Herring was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and a member of the Church of Christ in Refugio.

Herring worked for Refugio County, Pct. 1 until his retirement on Feb. 28, 1992. He graduated from Refugio High School in 1949 and was a life member of VFW Post 6290.

He was born on Jan. 15, 1929, in Louann, Ark. to James Thomas and Ollie Mae Gilbert Herring Sr.

He is preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Dorothy McGuill and a brother, Walter Richard Herring.

Survivors include two sisters, Frances Marie Herring of Refugio and Jimmie Mae Lackie of San Antonio; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation was held Monday, Jan. 19, from 5 to 7 p.m. in Moore Funeral Home Chapel.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, Jan. 20, at 10 a.m., at Moore Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Chris Brock officiating.

Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery, with full military honors.

Memorials may be made to VFW Post 6290 in Refugio.
