Lady Horns topple McMullen

The George West Lady Horns rise to the occasion after a slow start against the McMullen Cowgirls on Tues., Dec. 27. In the first half GW out scored McMullen 24-22 after the buzzer sounded the Lady Horns had held the Cowgirls off by that lone two because each team had scored 27 in the second half, 51-49. Marley Snider and Bethany Brysch combined their points for 21, followed by Mary Cansino, Erin Snider and Kate Jimerson combined points of 22. On rebounds Cansino, B. Brysch and Jimerson combined for 17. Brittney Mathis had four steals and three blocks. Wed., Dec. 28, was a long day for the Lady Horns along with Kaylee Brysch one of their own having knee surgery, a 4:30 game verses the Lady Owls of Odem and a 9:00 o’clock game verses the Lady Bulldogs of Orange Grove these ladies were in charge of the Hospitality Room, this made for a long day, but they did it well. Kaylee came through surgery almost ready to go and the hospitality room went well and the ladies added two more wins to their column. They defeated Odem 37-27 and Orange Grove 50-19. Leading the scoring were B. Brysch and Mathis with ten each. Brysch also pulled down 11 rebounds. Scoring against Orange Grove was Jimerson with 12, Cansino had ten and Victoria Wasicek added nine. Cansino led rebounds with nine, Brysch added eight, M. Snider had six assists, Mathis had three blocks and seven steals and Amber Villafranca added four. On Thursday, Dec. 29, the ladies saw the Lady Eagles of Pettus and jumped out to a 34-13 half-time lead and only allowed Pettus ten more points that evening, 53-23. Brysch lead scoring 14, M. Snider nine, Cansino and Jimerson eight, E. Snider five and Wasicek, two. Brysch pulled down 17 rebounds, followed by Jimerson with six. Mathis and Jimerson each had four blocks. M. Snider had seven assists and five steals. Jimerson and Villafranca combined for seven steals. Rounding out the George West team are Yolanda Sanchez and Briana Salazar. Amber Villafranca, Kate Jimerson and Brittney Mathis were named to the All-Tournament Team. Good Job Ladies! The ladies will end the first round of district play Fri. against Cotulla at home, come out and support the Lady Horns.
