WOODSBORO — Retired Woodsboro coach Don Schneider led the Eagles into the state playoffs in basketball 14 times in the 19 years he served as coach.

On Saturday, Jan. 14, at noon, Schneider will be inducted into the Coastal Bend Coaches Association Hall of Honor during a luncheon at the Holiday Inn Emerald Beach in Corpus Christi.

During his 19 years, the Eagles earned three regional basketball appearances, one area championship, five bi-district championships and three district championships.

“I feel really honored to be selected by my peers,” Schneider said.

The coach retired in 2010 after marking many glory days on the hardwood.

“Every year I had great kids who worked hard and they were quick,” Schneider said. “But it all comes down to one thing - tradition.”

After graduating from Schertz High School in 1967, Schneider was drafted into the Army and served in Vietnam from 1969 to 1970.

After his military service, he enrolled in Southwest Texas State University, now know as Texas State, under the G.I. Bill.

“I always liked sports and competition,” he said. “My high school track coach, Coach Rowl, was a real motivator. Coaching is a good lifestyle to follow.”

After graduating college in 1976, Schneider accepted his first coaching job at Los Fresnos in 1976, where he coached three sports in junior high and was head track and assistant basketball coach for two years.

He moved to Devine where he met his wife, Kathy. He served as head basketball coach for three years before moving to Woodsboro in 1986.

In Woodsboro he took the helm as head basketball coach and served in that capacity for 19 years.

Anyone wishing to attend the luncheon, at noon at the conclusion of the annual Coastal Bend Coaches Clinic, may purchase tickets at the door at the Holiday Inn, Emerald Beach in Corpus Christi.
