REFUGIO – Doris Marie Moore (Zellner), 92, of Refugio, died Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2012. She was a direct descendant of settlers of Refugio.

She was in the first graduating class of Refugio High School in 1936. She was also the first female elected mayor of Refugio, serving from 1964 through 1974. Doris Marie spent most of her life in Refugio as a wife and mother, mayor, and secretary for Our Lady of Refuge Catholic Church. She was a member of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas Moses Simpson Branch and the Alter Society.

Doris Marie was born Feb. 17, 1919, in Refugio to Justin Linney and Myrtle Eleanora Heart Johnson.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, her husband of over 40 years, William Hughes Moore, and her oldest son, William Hughes Moore Jr.

Survivors include eight children, Letha Kieffer and Phoebe Wilson, both of Rockport, John L. of Tom’s River, N.J., Richard S. of Goliad, Jane E. of Austin, Tom of Corpus Christi, Mick of Trenton, and Tony of Houston; 17 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Visitation was held for the family on Thursday, Jan. 19 at 6 p.m. A rosary was recited at 7 p.m. at Moore Funeral Home.

A funeral Mass was celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 20, at Our Lady of Refuge Catholic Church.

Burial was in Mount Calvary Cemetery.
