’Boro hammers Pettus despite rough start

WOODSBORO – The Woodsboro Lady Eagles continued their path to a district championship by hammering the Pettus Lady Eagles 12 to 1 in five innings.

The Woodsboro Lady Eagles started rough on Tuesday April 10 in Pettus.

“Woodsboro did not get a runner on base, much less a run across the plate, till the top of the third inning,” said coach Jaime Cano. “Pettus just made the defensive plays.”

Pettus struck first in the bottom of the first on a hard hit ball that was barely in fare and was misplayed off the fence in foul territory for their only score of the game.

The Lady Eagles hit the ball hard but right at the Pettus defenders for a quick three up three down in the first two innings. In the top of the third inning, the Woodsboro Lady Eagles scored four runs.

Right Fielder Jennifer Elizardo started the inning with a single followed by an RBI double by Jamie Wilson. Taylor Perez walked and stole second followed by a free pass to Hannah Carmichael.

With two runners on, Malorie Nesloney cashed in her free pass to load the bases. With the bases loaded, Toni Martinez unleashed a 3RBI double to center field, making the score 4-1 in favor of Woodsboro.

Woodsboro pitcher Nesloney settled down after that one first run f and allowed just two base runners the rest of the game on a bunt and error. On the top half of the fifth the Lady Eagles exploded for eight runs.

Taylor Perez lead off the inning with a single and a stolen second base. Carmichael then belted a double to center scoring Perez from second. Nesloney then sacrificed Carmichael over to third base. Kasye McCool received her walk.

With Carmichael at third and McCool stealing second, Elizardo then reached first on a drop third strike pass ball that scored Carmichael.

Kati Perez also punched her free walk card, with runners in scoring position, Wilson then hit an RBI single scoring McCool. Ashley Barraza then hit an RBI double to right center to score K. Perez and Wilson. T. Perez then hit a single and stole two bases, with Carmichael receiving her second walk of the game. T. Perez then scored the final run on a pass ball making the final score 12 to 1.

Nesloney (14-1) pitched a complete game 2 hitter, striking out 8 batters and giving up one unearned run.

Ashley Barraza went 1-4, 2RBI, 1R, Taylor Perez 2-3, 3SB, 3R, RBI, Hannah Carmichael 1-2, 2R, 1RBI, 1SB, Toni Martinez 1-3, 3RBI, Jennifer Elizardo 1-3 2R, 1SB, RBI, Jamie Wilson 3-3, 3RBI 2R.

The last district game for the Lady Eagles is set for Friday April 20 at 6 p.m. in Yorktown. The Lady Eagles now up their record to 19 wins and 2 losses.
