The goals of the Texas Summer Reading Club are to encourage the children and families of Texas to read for pleasure, to help children maintain and improve their reading skills, to encourage them to become lifelong readers and library users. Research shows that when children have the freedom to select books that they want to read, it helps them to establish a good foundation for academic success. The Texas Reading Club is self-paced and children can earn a beautiful certificate created by renowned Texas children's book illustrator, Bruce Hale, and signed by the Texas governor. At the Falls City library, children ages 4 through 2nd grade can earn a certificate for reading at least ten books, and older kids in grades 3 through 6 must read five books with at least 40 pages to get an award. The library has other activities planned including a visit with some interesting creatures from the Texas Zoo in Victoria, and a magic performance by the always popular, Spikey Mikey.
Registration for the reading club will begin Wednesday, May 23 and the program will officially start Tuesday, May 29 and end on Friday, June 29 with certificates and door prizes.
For a more detailed scheduled, contact the Falls City Public Library at 830-254-3361, Monday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. The library is looking forward to a great summer of reading fun.
