The Refugio High School Powerlifting Teams started the year with impressive performances in San Diego on Jan. 24, and in Edna on Jan. 30.

In Edna. The girls team finished in seventh place out of 19 teams. The boys team finished fourth out of 16 teams.

Each athlete is placed in a weight class, in which they squat, bench and dead lift. The places are determined by the total weight of all 3 lifts combined.

Individual results (Edna Meet include Rebecca Vasquez 5th, 390 pounds; Laura McGuill, 3rd, 620; Megan Pursell, 9th, 450; Alexa Montemayor, 9th, 430; Liz Hernandez, 2nd, 755; Stephanie Ordaz, 8th, 560.

On the boys team, Gino Dodge was third with 975 pounds; Daniel Loveday, 14th, 740; Tomas Canchola, 6th, 1,050; Sef Vargas, 11, 890; Bo Adams, 4, 1,200; Dylan Klare, 3, 1,350; Michael Lerma, 14th, 875; Taylor Henning, 4th, 1,195; Rudy Solis, 5th, 1,170; and Randy Harvey, 3rd, 1,265.

At the San Diego meet, Ferrell Flowers placed 3rd with 800 pounds; Brian Medina, 5th, 745; Gino Dodge, 5th, 975; Daniel Loveday, 13th, 725; Bobby Arcand, 4th, 1,020; Sef Vargas, 6th, 835; Bo Adams, 1,165; Dylan Klare, 1st, 1,340; Taylor Henning, 7th, 1,140.

On the girls team, Megan Pursell placed 3rd with 415 pounds; Megan Pursell 3rd 415; Rebecca Vasquez, 4th, 350; Laura McGuill, 3rd, 560; Alexa Montemayor, 5th, 415; and Liz Hernandez, 4th, 695.
