It was close the entire game, but when the game was on the line in the final seconds, Refugio stepped up big to steal the victory. Up by 2 points with 13 seconds to play, the game ended in 38-34.

Jack Gumm made a crucial steal to stop the Odem Owls scoring threat. Then John Wesley Shipp calmly sank two free throws with a second remaining to secure the win.

Shipp led the scoring with 15 pooints. He was 8 for 8 from the free throw line. Gumm scored 7 and Draigon Silvas added 6. Conner Lowrie had 5 points, Logan Myer 3 and Cameron Sternadel 2.

“The kids won this game playing great defense and by aggressively attacking the basket,” said Coach Ray.

Coach Ray stated, “Draigon, Jack and Cameron Sternadel were defensive standouts for the game.”

The 8th grade B team also pulled out a victory over the Odem Owls 23-12 Thursday evening in the Refugio High School gym.

Chris Williams started the on-fire scoring with 8 points in the first 8 minutes.

“He had to leave the game in the second quarter due to difficulty breathing,” according to Ray. “He returned to the gym later that evening, after he was checked out and was given a clean bill of health.”

Dustin Pacely scored 5 points to go along with his five blocks. Josh Martinez and Alex Valdez each added 4. Jacobb Solis and Glen Wineman scored 2 points a piece.
