Lady Cats earn Kenedy tourney championship

The Lady Cats completed the Kenedy Softball Tournament over the weekend undefeated and untied for the championship trophy.

Sixteen teams participated and the Lady Cats beat Poth JV 4-1, Runge 4-0, St. Joseph JV 4-0, Kingsville Academy 3-0, and Yorktown 8-1.

Alyssa McMahan went 4-0 on the mound and did not allow a single earned run. Improving her record to 7-2, she also took was named the tournament most valuable player honors.

All tournament honors went to Brittney Torfin and Kristen Wise. Brittney and Kristen had a tournament batting average of .545 making the selection process a little easier.

Cassandra Ramirez also batted .500 bringing in some timely runs for the Lady Cats.

Chelsea Lara contributed to the offensive output with a tournament average of .444.

Timely hits by Alyssa McMahan, Shelby Quintanilla and Shelby Bellows, who both batted over .300, rounded out the run production.

“Games are won by fine defensive play as well,” said Coach David Cruhm.

Stormy Brock, Alexa Montemayor, Brittah Williams, Brittney Gumm, Katie Bernal, Haley Brynelsen all contributed to the solid defensive play holding opposing teams to maximum one run.

“They performed well and played cohesively, proving that team work supersedes individuality,” the coach said, adding, “Congratulations Lady Cats!”
