Refugio High School’s two Lady Cat powerhouse lifters Laura McGuill and Elizabeth “Liz” Hernandez will compete at the regional meet this Saturday, March 7.

The meet gets underway at Tuloso-Midway High School at 9:15 a.m.

Both McGuill and Hernandez are two of the top-ranked power lifters in class 2A in the region.

Laura is no stranger to the regional meet. She has qualified for the past two years and finished third in the state last year. She moved to a different weight class but continues to compete well.

Going into the meet, Laura is ranked ninth in all school classes, from 1A-5A, with a combined weight of 620 pounds.

Liz is new to power-lifting this year, but has come up through the ranks quickly. Liz is ranked third among all 1A-5A schools with a total of 815 pounds. In class 2A schools in our region, she is the number one-ranked contender.

The top two girls in each weight class will advance to the state power-lifting meet, which will be held Friday and Saturday, March 20-21, at the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi.
