“Yes, he is extremely competent as a CFO, but he really is just a great person,” said Mauro Guerra, CEO, in an article written by Joel Williams in the San Antonio Business Journal.
A Refugio High School graduate, Perez earned an associates degree in accounting from Del Mar and a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Texas A&M - Corpus Christi.
His first job out of college was with the CPA firm of Henry M. Torralva in Beeville.
His parents, Joe and Elia Perez of Refugio will travel to San Antonio for the awards ceremony.
“We’re so proud of him,” said his mother, Elia Perez.
What began as two companies employing 46 people has ballooned to five companies with 160 employees. Revenues have tripled, the company refurbished two buildings and the company has grown to a client base of more than 450 physician groups, 15 hospitals and 23 surgery centers in South and Central Texas, according to the San Antonio Business Journal.
Soon after coming on board, Perez reorganized and revamped the company’s accounting system using the company’s newly acquired software. He then installed a new payroll system that saved the company time and money.
“We’re in an industry that is so scary for all of us right now,” Guerra said in the Journal story. “I’m so appreciative to have someone with the experience that he has, and the personality that he has, to keep us going through the ups and downs that we have gone through.”
Perez also heads up a year-end charity to provide assistance to families at Christmas.
He says he wants to be known as “the guy who looks out for the employee and for the company.”
From preparing financial statements to overseeing payroll, retirement and a host of other duties, Perez has gained the respect of his colleagues.
His philosophy is simple, “treat others as you wish to be treated. I practice that on a daily basis. I feel that if you are qualified to do the job, you don’t need me to look over your shoulder to see that the job is done. I treat all employees with respect and professionalism.”
