Services will be held at a later date for Eugene McGuill, 88, of Roswell who passed away Monday, March 2, 2009.
McGuill was born Oct. 1, 1920, to County Judge Thomas William and Lucy Serepta Hunt McGuill in Refugio.
As a teenager McGuill worked on the farm with his parents. He served the United States National Guard in 1938 and the United States Army in 1941. He was the Refugio County Surveyor in 1945, which is where he met his wife Dorothy Helen Herring.
He worked for several road contractors as a supervisor, for Republic Natural Gas in Refugio and in 1961 he transferred to Guymon, Okla. He also worked for Mobil Oil and with his friend Alton Burke fixing televisions and other electronics until he retired in 1986.
He was an avid RV traveler and attended the Indian Pow Wows in Anadarko, Okla. every year, and numerous national parks.
McGuill was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Helen Herring; one son, Thomas William McGuill II; one sister; Francis Hoch and her husband Sam; three brothers in law, James Thomas Herring, Walter Richard Herring and Cecil Lackie and one nephew, Sonny Foley.
Survivors include one daughter; Gena Sterling and her husband David; four grandchildren, Alexander, Hunter and Heather Sterling of Roswell, N.M. and David Sterling II of Burlington, Vt. two sisters; Verde Mae Foley and her husband Thurmond, of Brazoria, Malda Meadows and her husband James of Houston, three sisters in law, Jimmie Mae Lackie of San Antonio, Frances and Johanna Herring, both of Refugio, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
