SKIDMORE — The Bobcat varsity football team gave the Freer Buckaroos a few too many gifts on Friday night as the visitors captured a 28-14 victory at Skidmore-Tynan’s homecoming.

“Friday night’s game was very disappointing. Offensively, we turned the ball over three times with one being on the goal line after a nine-minute drive. Another possession was lost after a botched kick return,” said head coach Russell Joy.

“You cannot win games, turning the ball over and making mental mistakes on offense.”

Freer scored the lone touchdown of the first quarter but failed on the PAT to lead 6-0. A second period TD with a two-point conversion put a total of 14 points on the scoreboard by halftime for the Buckaroos, and the Bobcat defense managed a safety against the Freer offense to go into the halftime break behind by 12 at 14-2.

Freer scored once more in the third quarter, again missing the extra point attempt, to lead 20-2. The Bobcat offense clicked in the fourth period for two touchdowns as Donovan Encinia found the end zone on two carries. Both PAT tries failed.

The Buckaroos added one final score and a two-point conversion to even the final score out to a 28-14 win.

S-T out-rushed the Bucks 228 yards to 175 yards but the Freer passing attack picked up an additional 182 yards while S-T managed just 46 yards through the air. R.J. Estrada was three of 12 passing with the three passes going to three different receivers. Jonathan Hernandez, Brandon East and Nathan Magana all hauled in one catch for the Bobcats.

Encinia led the S-T rushing attack with 99 yards on just seven carries and went for the two TDs. Andrew Casarez was right behind him with 90 yards on 18 tries. Magana rushed for 20 yards on three totes, and Kyle Nelson had 14 yards rushing on five attempts.

The Bobcats travel south for a Thursday night contest with Kingsville Academy at Javelina Stadium.

“Kingsville is a spread offensive attack that likes to throw the ball down the field. They are big up front and play an aggressive eight-man front,” Joy said.

“We will have to do a better job taking care of the football on offense.”

The sub-varsity games were played on Tuesday night this week in Skidmore.
