BEEVILLE ­— The Port Lavaca Sandcrabs dealt the Trojan sub-varsity football teams two tough outings on Thursday night before heading back to the city by the coast.

The Calhoun freshman boys dominated the depleted Beeville ninth-grade team 64-0. The Sandcrab defense stopped the Trojans at every turn and then had the speed and power to score almost at will over the Beeville boys.

The freshman squad of Trojans played hard the entire game and did not quit. The ninth-grade squad is not at full strength this year with most of the team’s starters playing at the junior varsity level and starting for the JV squad. Most will possibly jump to the varsity level next year.

Titus Puente made one catch good for 12 yards from QB Tony Aleman. Natahniel Martinez had a good, positive run for six yards for the Trojans

“We need to keep giving it our all, week to week. Effort is what we need, week in and week out,” said freshman coach Alan Burkett.

The JV contest was a little better for the Trojans but not by much. The Sandcrabs again dominated and captured a 41-8 win.

Beeville QB Ryan Pena scored on a short run toward the end of the second period to make it a 27-6 contest. Derrick Salazar plunged in for the two-point conversion.

The Trojans had one last attempt on offense as the Sandcrabs tossed away a pitch, and Salazar fell on the ball to put the Trojans offense back on the field with just seconds remaining in the first half. A pass into the end zone fell incomplete, however, and the teams went into the intermission with the visitors out front 27-8.

The Sandcrabs added two more touchdowns in the second half while holding the Beeville boys scoreless.

Samuel Navarro, Steve Barrera, Salazar, JD Cuevas and Justice Estrada all had good runs for the Trojans. Defensively, Cuevas, Joe Morin, Josh Munoz, Nick Harris, Salazar and Pena came up with big plays on defense.

The sub-varsity Trojans will be on the road in Calallen on Thursday night to tangle with the Wildcats.
