WOODSBORO- The Woodsboro Eagles capped off their most successful season in several years and punched their ticket to the state playoffs by swatting the Louise Hornets 55-21 last Friday night in Woodsboro.

The Eagles finish their 2012 campaign with an 8-2 record and will now face the Bartlett Bulldogs in the bi-district round of the Class 1A Division 2 playoffs.

Louise got on the board first, scoring on a long run to make it 7-0 with 9:20 left in the first quarter. It took just one minute for the Eagles to answer as quarterback Tyler Quesada hit receiver Logan Moses with a 36-yard pass to give the Eagles a first and goal at the Hornet four-yard-line.

Two plays later, Lionel Brown ran around the left side for a score. Brown also ran in the two-point try to give his team an 8-7 lead.

On the Hornets next possession, Trent Moses recovered a fumble, giving his team excellent field position. A couple of plays later, Quesada broke free for a 45-yard touchdown run. The extra point try was no good and the Eagles now led 14-7.

The Hornets put together a long drive on their next possession. On a second and goal from the Eagle seven-yard-line, a Hornet runner was stopped at the one and fumbled. The ball rolled into the end zone and appeared to be recovered by Woodsboro. The recovery was awarded to the Hornets and the Eagles lead was cut to 14-13.

The Eagles again wasted little time in responding as Andy Villareal returned the ensuing kickoff 40-yards deep into Hornet territory. A few plays later, Quesada scored on a one-yard quarterback sneak to give his team a 20-13 lead after one quarter of play.

Louise scored early in the second quarter to take a 21-20 lead and then held the Eagles on their next possession.

As the Hornets began driving again, Jonathan Flores ended the momentum with an interception. Flores then scored on a nine-yard burst up the middle. Quesada ran in the two-point try and the Eagles regained the lead at 28-21.

The ensuing kickoff was recovered by Jacob Nesloney, giving the Eagles the ball at the Hornet 38-yard line. A couple of plays later, Debray Bonner broke a several tackles for a 27-yard touchdown run. Brown would run in the two-point try to give Woodsboro a 36-21 lead with 2:50 left in the first half.

The first half fireworks continued as Woodsboro got the ball back and Quesada hit Logan Moses with two consecutive passes of 15 yards and 44 yards. Quesada then scored his third touchdown of the night on a one-yard plunge to end the half with the Eagles leading 42-21.

“It feels good to win and know that we are back in the playoffs,” said junior lineman Brian “Bam-Bam” Wiginton. “We made some adjustments on defense and slowed their running game down. We were not about to let this one get away from us. Our skill position players made things happen tonight and our team played with a sense of urgency.”
