“Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 3:13-14 (KJV).

Another year has nearly come to an end, and as such this year has been filled with good and bad. Tumultuous times exist in the world, uncertain days ahead in America, and ever changing weather conditions are just a few of the things being faced in today’s world.

Apostle Paul states that while he doesn’t understand everything, he knows that one needs to leave what has already happened behind and continue pressing toward being all he can be in Christ Jesus. Believers need to take this exhortation to heart as well.

No matter what may be around the world God is still God, and as such believers still need to trust in Him to know that He will take care of His children.

All can gain some insight from athletes. When mistakes and misfortunes befall a team or an athlete, a coach will encourage the particular group or performer to shake it off and move on. This holds true for believers. The text reminds all to forget the past, shake it off, and move forward toward the ultimate goal, and that is pleasing God.

Athletes are all too familiar with setbacks. But they know that they have to rise up and push forward for the prize of victory. Believers are in a race to finish the course. Apostle Paul spoke of this determination in his closing remarks to Timothy in 2 Timothy 4:7: “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I kept the faith.”

May all continue to press forward and not dwell on the past. May all press forward to victory in Christ Jesus.
