In what seems to have turned into an annual event, the Refugio Bobcats faced the Lexington Eagles in the regional round of the playoffs for the third year in a row and held back a tough Eagle team to advance to the state quarterfinals to the tune of 49-21.
In the first half of the game, both teams traded blows up and down the field and both teams produced a touchdown each. Lexington struck first but the Cats answered quickly with a 14-yard touchdown pass from Travis Quintanilla to Chase Whetsel to tangle up the game 7-7.
The second quarter mirrored the first with Lexington making it to the end zone to push ahead 14-7. A two-yard touchdown run by Draigon Silvas would tie it up 14-14 with 5:23 left before halftime.
In the second half the Bobcat offense began to roll, scoring twice in the third period and three times in the fourth quarter. Refugio’s first score in the third came on a short toss for a three-yard touchdown to Dana Franklin. Two minutes later Quintanilla found Marcus Thompson on a 13-yard touchdown pass to make the score 28-14 going into the final period.
The Bobcat defense kept the Eagles at bay with stellar plays by Devon LaFrance and Jim LaFond.
In the fourth quarter, the Bobcats hit the accelerator with Draigon Silvas scoring on two runs. Silvas scored from nine-yards out, then the Eagles answered with a score of their own to make it 35-21.
Silvas then took a handoff and rumbled 49 yards to extend the lead to 42-21. Silvas also showed off his arm late in the game throwing an 11-yard pass to Dana Franklin for a touchdown to seal the win 49-21.
Quintanilla threw 20 passes, completing 12 for 185 yards in the game and showed off his running skills running four times for 30 yards.
The Bobcats will face the East Bernard Brahmas in the quarterfinal round this Friday night in San Marcos at the Texas State Bobcats Stadium.
The matchup between the two undefeated teams will decide the Region 4 2A Division II Championship.
Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. Friday night.
