BEEVILLE — The varsity Lady Trojans fought back from an early three-point deficit to take a two-point lead at the end of the first period and never trailed again in Tuesday night’s 49-40 victory over the Calallen Ladycats.

The win improves the Beeville girls’ record to 22-5 on the season and 4-1 in district for the 24th 4A ranked team in the state.

The visitors owned a 9-6 lead after the first couple of minutes, but the Lady Trojans fought back to take a 11-9 lead at the end of the first eight minutes. The second quarter was all defense as neither team could buy a basket. Both teams added only five points to their scores. It was a 16-14 Beeville lead at the half.

The teams played at a little faster pace in the third quarter. Both teams totaled their first half out-puts, keeping the game close at 32-28 with the Lady Trojans owning the four-point advantage.

The Beeville lead in the fourth quarter fluctuated between 10 and seven points the rest of the way. The Lady Trojans finished the final stanza with 17 points scored and contained the Wildcat girls to 12.

Ailing Victoria Elizalde played limited minutes but led the Beeville scoring with 17 points. Tori Muñoz and Brennan Holder were both in double figures with 10 apiece.

Ciara Garcia added eight points off the bench. Lynn Puente hit one three-pointer for her scoring contribution. Theresa Amador hit one free throw.

“We’ve been fighting off some bug that is going through the entire team. Victoria was still struggling with the effects of being ill, but managed to knock down some key shots as well as open it up for her teammates,” said head coach Katina Walker.

The Lady Trojan pressure defense was a key in the win.

“Tori Muñoz’s defense was contagious tonight. Tori seems to get everyone going when she gets all over the other team,” Walker said.

The rebounding of Paige McKinney, Garcia and Holder was also a highlight for the hosts.

“They pulled down boards that prevented put-backs by the Ladycats and really helped in the victory,” Walker said.

The Lady Trojans played at Tuloso-Midway last night (Friday) and will travel to Gregory-Portland on Tuesday night to face another team of Wildcats.
