JV Bobcats play lots of hardball during spring break

The Refugio Junior Varsity Baseball team had a busy Spring Break. The Bobcats competed in the Skidmore-Tynan JV Tournament as well as playing their final two non-district games.

On Thursday, March 12, the Bobcats took on the Beeville Trojans in the opening round game, losing the game, 9-6.

The 4A Trojans jumped on the Bobcats early taking a 5-0 lead after the top half of the inning.

The Bobcats came out determined with two outs, Jared Contreras, Charlie Henderson, and Justin Padilla each scored runs with hits from Robert Loredo and Tyler McNabb making the score 5-3, Beeville.

In the second inning, Bobcat Josh Villarreal added another run to make the score 5-4 Beeville.

With the Trojans quickly retired in the top of the third inning, the Bobcats added two runs from Josh Villarreal and Josh Alsop, giving the Bobcats a 6-5 lead.

In the fourth inning the wheels finally came off of the Bobcats as the Trojans scored four runs to take a commanding 9-6 lead.

The Bobcats had runners in the bottom of the fourth inning on second and third base with two outs but could not regain the lead.

Taking the loss on the mound was Robert Loredo who is now 0-1 on the season. Leading batters for the Bobcats were Josh Villarreal 2-3 with 2 runs, Jared Contreras 3-3 with 1 run, and Charlie Henderson 2-3 with 1 run. The Bobcats’ record is 5 wins 2 losses and 2 ties.

The Bobcats hit the ground running with the second round of the Skidmore-Tynan Junior Varsity Tournament which took place a few hours after their tough loss to Beeville.

The Bobcats took their frustrations out on the Nixon-Smiley Mustangs. The Bobcats gave up a run in the top half of the first inning making the score 1-0 Mustangs.

Refugio took the lead in the bottom half of the first and never look back with runs from Jared Contreras, Josh Villarreal, Charlie Henderson, and Robert Loredo to take a 4-1 lead.

In the bottom of the second inning behind runs from Jared Contreras, Josh Villarreal, Logan Koonce, Charlie Henderson, Paul Boyer, Jarod LaFond, and Jonathan Medina, the Bobcats took an 11-1 lead.

In the third inning the Mustangs scored one run to make it 11-2 Bobcats. Refugio added to their lead in the bottom half of the inning behind Logan Koonce and Charlie Henderson each scoring twice, Paul Boyer, Jonathan Medina, Omar Flores, Jared Contreras, and Josh Villarreal to take a 20-2 lead to close out the game in the top of the fourth.

On the mound for the Bobcats was Jarod LaFond who picked up his first victory of the season to take his record to 1-1. Michael Lerma came on to close out the game with two impressive strikeouts.

Leading batters for the Bobcats were Jared Contreras 1-1 with 3 runs, Josh Villarreal 3-3 with 3 runs, Logan Koonce 3-4 with 3 runs, Charlie Henderson 1-1 with 4 runs, Paul Boyer 3-4 with 2 runs, and Jonathan Medina 2-2 with 2 runs. The Bobcats record is now 5 wins 3 losses and 2 ties on the season.

On March 17, the Bobcats traveled to Vanderbilt to take on the Industrial Cobras Junior Varsity.

The Bobcats jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead behind runs from Josh Villarreal, Charlie Henderson, and Justin Padilla. In the bottom of the second inning the Cobras struck back on a number of Bobcat errors, scoring 6 runs to make the score 6-3, Industrial and they would never look back.

In the fourth inning the Bobcats scored behind Logan Koonce to make it 6-4 Industrial. Industrial scored 4 more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to make it 10-4 Industrial.

The Bobcats could not regain the lead in the sixth inning. Justin Padilla took the loss for the Bobcats bringing his record to 2-2 on the season.

Leading batters for the Bobcats were Josh Villarreal 2-3 scoring a run and Charlie Henderson 1-2 scoring a run. The Bobcats record is now 6 wins 3 losses and 2 ties on the season.

On March 20, Refugio traveled to Falls City to take on the Beavers. Refugio took an early 1-0 lead after one inning of play with Jonathan Medina scoring.

In the third inning Josh Villarreal and Logan Koonce scored to make it 3-0 Bobcats. Falls City scored in the bottom of the third to make it 3-1 Bobcats.

The Bobcats scored in the top of the fourth with a Robert Loredo run making it 4-1 Refugio. In the fifth inning the floodgates opened up for Refugio as they would score runs behind Charlie Henderson, Logan Koonce, Jared Contreras, Robert Loredo, Paul Boyer and Jonathan Medina to take a commanding 10-1 lead to win the game.

Logan Koonce picked up the victory on the mound bringing his record to 3-0 on the season. Logan had six strikeouts in the game.

Leading batters for Refugio were Jonathan Medina 2-3 with 2 runs, Logan Koonce 1-1 with 2 runs, Robert Loredo 2-2 with 2 runs, and Paul Boyer 1-1 with 1 run. The Bobcats now have a record of 6 wins 4 losses and 2 ties.

The Junior Varsity Bobcats will open district play on Friday, March 27, in Odem.
