Lopez scored her personal best with a total of 745 pounds and her top dead lift of 300 pounds.
Senior Chelsea Simpson finished her career in power lifting with a struggle in the squat.
“She was just not feeling well in the days ahead and had actually lost about four pounds,” said Coach Howell. “She went from 113 to 109 pounds from two weeks earlier. This might not seem like a substantial drop in weight, but when you think about the percent of body weight lost, I feel that it had a huge impact.”
Howell explained that power-lifting is a mental sport. Feeling sick or not feeling yourself, impedes lifters from competing at their optimal level.
This meet was not the end of the road for the two Lady Eagles. The girls will compete in the USA Powerlifting High School Nationals.
“This will give the girls a great opportunity to see powerlifting on a grand scale and hopefully redeem some disappointment from state,” Howell said.
Boys regional meet
Woodsboro senior Josh Fierova finished 4th in the region, completing a high school career that allowed him to achieve lifts totaling 1,305 pounds at the regional meet.
Ernest Yanez completed a total of 1,135 after struggling in the dead lift competition. Ernest completed a 340 lb bench press, which helped his numbers and pushed him into 6th place in the region.
